Calvary United Methodist Church is a Safe Sanctuary church. Our congregation’s purpose for establishing a Safe Sanctuary Policy and accompanying procedures is to demonstrate our absolute and unwavering commitment to the overall safety and spiritual growth of all of our children, youth and vulnerable adults. Therefore, as a Christian community of faith and a United Methodist congregation, we pledge to conduct the ministry of the gospel in ways that ensure the safety and spiritual growth of all our children, youth and vulnerable adults as well as all those who work with children, youth and vulnerable adults. We will follow safety measures in the selection and recruitment of staff and volunteers; we will implement prudent operational procedures in all programs and events; we will educate all those who work with children, youth and vulnerable adults regarding all appropriate policies and methods (including first aid and methods of discipline); and we will have a clearly defined procedure for reporting a suspected incident of abuse that conforms to the requirements of state law..
In 2014, the Pennsylvania Legislature enacted sweeping changes to the Child Protective Services Law (CPSL), including but not limited to expansion of mandated reporters, expansion of individuals subject to required clearances from the Pennsylvania State Police, Department of Human Services (formerly Department of Public Welfare) and the FBI, expansion of the frequency of the required clearances and imposition of significant criminal penalties for noncompliance. Below is an explanation of procedures for completing volunteer clearances. Calvary United Methodist Church can also help you obtain these clearances in order to volunteer for one of our children or youth ministries, provided you also fulfill the other requirements laid out by our Safe Sanctuary Policy. Please contact the church office for more information.
Calvary United Methodist Church is committed to providing support for all of our congregation and others who chose to volunteer their time to being the church. Whether you spend time with the youngest of our congregation to visiting with the oldest, it is important to us that you have the tools you need to carry out your ministry to the best of your ability. Being a Safe Sanctuary congregation also carries with it responsibilities, such as adhering to guidlelines and providing required clearances. This page will be updated as necessary throughout the year dependent on needs, law changes, and special events. Please feel free to contact the office at any time should you have questions!

Recently, 24 pieces of legislation were enacted in order to protect youth in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Calvary UMC has had their Safe Santuary policy in place for a few years now, and had already made many steps toward safeguards. However, one large change with the law requires direct background checks, in lieu of being run by a third party, for all volunteers with contact with children. For more information on the law and what it requires of volunteers, you can go to:http://keepkidssafe.pa.gov/cs/groups/webcontent/documents/document/C_135249.pdf
